OCR: FIRST OBSERVATIONS THE CANALS OF MARS OBSERVATIONS Percival Lowell (1855-1916) P. Lowell OF SPACE PROBES ONS The issue of the Martian canals caused a stir again in the 1890s, thanks to Percival Lowell. A native of Boston, Lowell had been an amateur astronomer in his youth. ANALS After studying at Harvard, he worked in the U.S. diplomatic corps in the Far East. But he returned to his boyhood passion, astronomy. His contribution to knowledge of the UNKNOWN heavens was decisive in the later discovery of Pluto-whose name begins with Lowell's initials, P.L ., in honor of his work. However, it was Mars that fascinated Lowell above all else, and he devoted his life and fortune to studying 50 the Red Planet. CANALS AND VEGETAT The aging Schiaparelli's vision was weakening and he had to abandon his observations in 1892. Lowell decided to 35,400,000 MILES ON SEPT. 11,1956 continue in the Italian's footsteps. Not one to go halfway, Lowell set out in search a spot to build an observatory, a spot with a cloudless sky and far from city lights. As even amateur astronomers know, such atmospheric "disturbances" distort telescopic images. MARS BETAT
